KENYA FRIENDS OF ISRAEL REJECTS UN GENERAL ASSEMBLY RESOLUTION UPGRADING THE STATUS FOR PALESTINIANS TO NON-MEMBER OBSERVER STATE

We, Kenya Friends of Israel Foundation do strongly oppose the endorsement of a resolution by the UN General Assembly to upgrade the status for Palestinians to non-member observer state.

On Thursday, November 29, 2012, the United Nations General Assembly endorsed an upgrade in status for Palestine in the UN,in spite of opposition from Israel and the United States. The resolution elevated their status from "non-member observer entity" to "non-member observer state," the same category as the Vatican. Palestinians hope the recognition will provide new leverage in their negotiations with Israel. Its leaders had been working with dozens of supporting nations to develop a formal draft, enlisting the support of European countries such as France and Spain. The vote was 138 delegates in favor of the measure, 9 against and 41 abstentions. Voting "no" were Israel, the United States and Canada, joined by the Czech Republic, Panama and the Pacific island nations of Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, and Palau].

Despite the overwhelming support of the resolution by majority of nations and Kenya co-sponsoring the resolution, we would like to register our strong rejection of the same based on the following historical facts.

First and foremost, Israel is a state built in the Jewish people’s ancient homeland, with its eternal capital Jerusalem. There are no people in the whole world who have deep roots in the land of Israel than the Jews. They have lived there longer than those who now want to claim a portion of that land. There is a 4000 year old bond between the people of Israel and the land of Israel and that cannot be changed by a mere resolution at the UN General Assembly.

Secondly, Israel is an independent and sovereign state that never hesitates to defend itself, but always extend its hand for peace unlike the Palestinians who have through history shown no interest in peace. Israel’s Prime Minister Netanyahu recently said “Israel is prepared to live in peace with a Palestinian state, but for peace to endure, Israel’s security must be protected. The Palestinians must recognize the Jewish State and they must be prepared to end the conflict with Israel once and for all. Any plans to enact a Palestinian state with a view to displace the Jews from their ancestral land is totally unacceptable.

Thirdly, the UN resolution is one sided and biased. None of the vital interests of peace, none of them appear in the resolution. The only way to achieve peace is through agreements that are reached by the parties and not through U.N. resolutions that completely ignore Israel’s vital security and national interests. There is no demand that has been placed on the Palestinians to recognize Israel as a Jewish State, to disarm or to end terror against Israel. It has totally ignored and turned a blind eye on the agreement, which have been signed before between the two parties. It is hypocritical for the UN Members States supporting the resolution to keep condemning Israel for protecting herself while ignoring the real source of conflict; terror from the Palestinians. It is ironical to see France, UK and Australia summon the Israeli Ambassadors to reprimand them for the approval of the building of more than 3,000 housing units in Jerusalem. They are claiming that this is against the agreements to freeze building in Judea and Samaria. Why aren’t they summoning the president of Palestinian Authority for circumventing the agreements made with Israel in the peace process? It is a pity that the nation that is bashed the most is Israel. We totally support the expansion of Jerusalem as Israel has a right to decide what they need to do and also where they need to build.

Fourthly, 65 years ago, the United Nations voted to partition the British Mandate into two states: a Jewish state, and an Arab state. Israel accepted this plan. The Palestinians and Arab nations rejected it and launched a war of annihilation to throw the “Jews into the sea”. On the contrary, Israel has not began a war to annihilate the Arabs / Palestinians who live within the borders of Israel after the passing of this resolution. Israel has shown from time to time that she is more than willing to live side by side with the Palestinians in peace. On the contrary, the Palestinians are seeking statehood so that they can eliminate Israel from the Middle East. They are not prepared to live side by side with the Jews within the same region. History has proved this fact to be true.

In 2005 Israel dismantled entire communities and uprooted thousands of people from their homes in the Gaza Strip. And rather than use this opportunity to build a peaceful future, the Palestinians turned Gaza into an Iranian terror base, from which thousands of rockets were fired into Israeli cities. The area has been turned into a launching pad for rockets into Israeli cities, a haven for global terrorists, and an ammunition dump for Iranian weapons.

In conclusion, we urge our government to carefully consider her actions as this has not shown any consideration towards Israel despite all the support we (Kenyans) have received in our time of need. E.g. 1998 bombing of the US embassy where more than 250 people were killed-Israel offered lots of assistance, the collapse of a building at River road- Israel too came to our rescue. The move has proved that Kenya is slowly but steadily moving away and turning a cold shoulder to her long time friend, Israel. As Kenyans who care and love our nation and also stand with Israel, we are hereby stating that we are opposed to this move and would like to see a deliberate effort by our government to stand with Israel the same way she has stood with us.

God bless Israel. God bless Kenya.
